January 12, 1998:

Today I received a reply to the November 22, 1997 letter to Spectrum Literary Agency regarding use of Quotes from Heinlein's works on this web site. I am happy to say that permission has been granted! The letter did, however, request that quotations from Time Enough for Love in "The Notebooks of Lazarus Long" chapters be limited to a total of ten quotes at any one time. I have edited the database down to ten of these quotes and will no longer accept quotes from this specific collection. The text of the letter follows (you can also view a scan of the letter):

Mr. Andrew Brian Peterson

Dear Mr. Peterson:

Thank you for your letter of November 22nd regarding the use of quotes from Robert A. Heinlein on your Quotable Heinlein website.

I have discussed your letter with Mrs. Virginia Heinlein. In general, we can grant permission to use reasonably short excerpts on the site. However, it appears that most of the quotations from THE NOTEBOOK OF LAZARUS LONG are on your site, and that can hurt sales of the book. We ask that you limit the number of quotations from THE NOTEBOOK OF LAZARUS LONG to no more than 10 at any one time.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Best wishes,

Eleanor Wood

December 11, 1997:

James Gifford requested that I remove the links to his Robert A Heinlein Home Page and the Robert Heinlein FAQ from Quotable Heinlein. He did not want his pages to be in any way associated with Quotable Heinlein. I have removed all links to his pages. The driving reason behind the request is his opinion that Quotable Heinlein is in violation of fair use guidelines for copyrighted material. Rather than ignore the issue, I have sent a letter to the literary representative of the estate, as follows:

Dear Ms. Wood:

It is my understanding that you represent the Robert A. Heinlein estate in literary matters. Since May 1996, I have operated a non-commercial site on the Internet called "Quotable Heinlein" that is intended to provide a place for Heinlein fans to share favorite quotations from Mr. Heinlein's works. When a visitor arrives at the web site (located at http://www.vitalnet.com/heinlein/) a quotation randomly selected from the database is displayed. The visitor can view additional quotes, view the entire database, and submit their own quotes. There are currently 320 quotes in the database, the majority submitted by visitors to the site (I submitted the first batch to get the site going). Other areas of the web site include a list of links to other Heinlein sites and discussion boards through which fans can chat about Heinlein related matters.

Someone recently noted that it is possible I have infringed on the estate's copyrights by creating the site. I am not a lawyer, much less a copyright lawyer, and would appreciate clarification on the use of quotes at the site from representatives of the estate. Please note the following:

  • The site is not a commercial venture. I don't charge visitors or have advertising revenue or paid sponsorship.
  • I will never make any money or other profit from the site.
  • The majority of the quotes have been submitted by dozens of participating visitors.
  • All quotes are attibuted to the author with copyright.
  • No claim is made by me as being the author of any of the quotes presented.
  • Quotes from dozens of Heinlein's novels, short stories, speeches, and personal correspondence have been submitted by fans.

If I have unintentionally infringed on any rights of the estate, I apologize and will remove the site from the internet if desired. If I have infringed, but the estate is willing to allow Quotable Heinlein to continue operation, I would appreciate written clarification on the matter. If I have not infringed, I will continue to operate the site.

It is my sincere hope that I will be able to continue operation of the site. Many long-time fans enjoy it and it serves as promotion to the casual visitor unfamiliar with Mr. Heinlein's works.

Sincerely,

Andrew B. Peterson

October 26, 1997:

I made several modifications to the message board scripts today based on user feedback. I added a success message that appears after the Submit button is pressed if the message is sent successfully. I also added a small bit of text above the submit button to tell the user what to expect. Revised the intial message to reflect the current status of the Live Chat feature. I also removed the automatic quoting of the original message in the reply form.

October 12, 1997:

Today, I finished revising the Message Boards and I am very happy with the results! The boards look great (in my own humble opinion) and add much much more flexibility in viewing messages. For example, you can display a list of message threads for a specific forum filtered by keywords or simply limit the threads listed to X number of days. Also, threads are displayed in one frame while clicking on a thread's link displays the message in another. This will eliminate the aggravation of being returned to the top of the message board listings in some browsers.

Thanks to the following Quotable Heinlein contributors for submitting twelve additional quotes to the database: Fatima "Lillith" Martinez, fatima_martinez@hotmail.com, Dale Jaco, dale.w.jaco@cdev.com, Robert Dowell, BshpKronos@aol.com, Travis Pawliuk, avatar@v-wave.com, Occula, Occula@webtv.net, Brooks A. September 3, 1997:

Thanks to Susan, Timothy P. Smith, and Scott Palmer for submitting five more quotes.

August 25, 1997:

Thanks to Susan, Rob, and Kevin for submitting quotes! I also modified the Javascript used to create the animated buttons to be more compatible with browsers that do not fully support Javascript.

August 19, 1997:

Thanks to Susan and J. Neil Schulman, jneil@pulpless.com for collectively pushing the quote count up above the 200 mark! See the Heinlinks for a link to Mr. Schulman's interview with the Master himself.

August 17, 1997:

Thanks to Susan and Brad Gruetzmacher for submitting even more quotes. Today we reached a total of 194 quotes, quickly approaching a milestone of 200 quotes! And better yet, there is now a much better chance that names other than my own will show when loading a quote. I also added a link to Sony's Starship Troopers web site and returned a link to A Boondock Salute to RAH (it was down the last time I checked the link) in the Heinlinks. A few other links were also added.

August 13, 1997:

Thanks to Charlie, Russell P. Nagel, Edward Ruth, and Doug King for collectively submitting over twenty new quotes! Keep 'em coming....

August 11, 1997:

Optimized the GIF files used throughout the site, saving a couple of kilobytes. Perhaps the site loads slightly faster, but I can't see a difference.

August 10, 1997:

Complete site renovation, including new frames-based design with animated navigation bar (using Javascript), Add-a-Quote submission form, discussion boards, a separate Heinlinks page, and this What's New? page. Site will still work with a non-frames browser and non-Javascript browsers.

June 7, 1996:

Site established, including synthesized speech via the Talker plug-in and Perl scripting.
