"Half a MInd?" |
While reading an Imponderables book to Isaac (xmas present) the question was asked "Where did the saying that we only use 10% of our brain come from?" It was in the Frustable sections meaning that they've never come up with a definitive answer, but, the author has two friends who swore that Robert Heinlein said it in one of his novels though he was never able to track down the one.I believe I know where this came from. I haven't checked myself and won't until we get some answers. Anyone? Suze

Howdy, Suzela,I am not sure that Heinlein specified 10%. That has been a figure bandied about for a long time. He was familiar with Samuel Renshaw and his tachistoscope, which demonstrated that people could recognize objects and words and letters and numerals and grasp them much more quickly than originally thought. He mentioned it in "Gulf," and we know that Captain Gilead/Joe Greene, his hero, learned to use much more of his already-exceptional mental capacity by such training and also by learning the newspeak language that was developed from the 64 principal sounds the human can make. But the 10% figure doesn't strike me as one he put forth. --Al
